Rome [ENA] On 2nd October the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Luigi Di Maio, met the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey, Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu in Rome. A joint press point has been held at the end of the meeting. The Turkish Foreign Ministry Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, in the joint press point with his colleague Luigi Di Maio at the Italian Ministry for Foreign Affairs declared that

Greece and Cyprus "hold the European Union hostage" with regard to relations with Turkey. "With the European Union we really want to strengthen our cooperation in various fields," said the Turkish Minister, stressing that divisions remain in the process of Turkey’s accession. However, for Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu after these years the Turkish people seems to be "no longer very eager" to join the Eurpean Union. “But we live in Europe”, Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu observed and Ankara and Brussels need to continue their collaboration. "Unfortunately, Greece and Cyprus hold the European Union hostage and for this reason we are unable to make further progress.

If the EU wants to become a reliable institution it must tell its member countries when they are wrong, but we have seen that it is not possible “.Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu added: “We are determined to find a solution and defend our rights. We are open to collaboration, but still determined. If no solutions are found, we will react and will be able to assert our rights ”. https://youtu.be/Fixw6Bbmmn4

Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu has voiced support for Azerbaijan and its right to self-defense. The Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs defended Azerbaijan in the ongoing conflict over Nagorno Karabakh with Armenia and stressed that Azerbaijan has so far shown that it can stand up for itself and does not need Turkish help. Four U.N. Security Council and two U.N. General Assembly resolutions, as well as many international organizations, demand the withdrawal of the occupying forces.

A cease-fire, however, was agreed upon in 1994. At the moment Italy and Germany are willing to mediate between the two former Soviet nations whose relations have been volatile since 1991. Armenia and Azerbaijan are members of the Eastern Partnership (EaP) a joint initiative involving the EU, its Member States and six Eastern European Partners.
